I can’t even fathom having a car like that and not driving it. Unless it was bought strictly as an investment and  the owner has another awesome mid engined car for a daily , this is just shit.

Maybe something happened to the owner — like injury/death or jail.

I'm going with "fled the country for tax evasion".

It appears that it’s only changed hand between dealers, so not as bad as originally thought... Not sure why it doesn’t just say “New” instead of listing the miles.

I wonder with a dealer to dealer sale like this, what kind of hit the seller takes (if any). Maybe a little profit, just not nearly as much as they’d make on an actual sale?

I’m not that cruel. He knew I was going to drive it, and said he was glad it was going to get used. He bought himself a 54k mile 2002 SL500 for $16.5k that he was actually going to drive. Guess he just couldn’t be the first one to get a rock chip on the SS.

Funny thing is, as much of a queen this thing was, and how he kept every little original item and piece of paper, he actually didn’t do a great job of preserving the finish. It’s not bad, per se , but it looks like he probably washed it too often and didn’t use best methods. With the sun shining directly on it, you can see plenty of fine scratches in the clear. Going to take it to my detailer and see about getting a light correction and ceramic coat.

I’ve driven a couple of these at the track and they were a bit underwhelming, which was super disappointing to me because I’ve always liked them (they used to be my ‘lottery car’).

The new NSX I was in at the track felt better and made cool sounds (you’d have to make a personal choice between turbo noises and v10, neither is wrong but they’re different).

Personally, I haven’t been in or driven anything more fun/engaging than a GT3 911 (can’t go wrong with any of the modern versions, I’ve only driven the 997 and 991 versions and both were amazing).

I’ve never understood not driving cars, I try to convince everyone to take theirs to the track (or at least an autox) and really drive them.

oh dang. Seals or lines probably gummed up from old fuel and heat/pressure caused a leak.

All fuel related parts, even if they are 100% brand new in a box, are classified as “hazmat” and can only be shipped ground aka 5 days. Super odd but tis the law I guess.

We have a couple F50 here getting full reseals and fuel bladders as a maintenance due to time instead of use. Basically, reseal then replace those exact same fresh seals again later

Have you driven the original? I prefer that design.

I like the NSX - I think it could be a great bargain buy in a few years.

I haven’t driven a GT3, but had a ride-along in a 996, and... yeah. Old guy - knew it like the back of his hand and drove the piss out of it.

My SS will make it to the track eventually, but it will probably be a while. Might end up with a (much lighter) more dedicated track toy before that happens.

I don’t think I drove the original R8, I drove one that was a little older and was like the 2nd gen or facelifted version of the original, but it was like one lap and the DCT shifting was awful.

I haven’t driven the original NSX either, one of my friends had one but sold it for a GT3 (one of the ones I got to drive).

I have a friend with a Jungle Green Chevy SS with a manual , he tracked it a couple of times before getting an FRS to drive on the track and at autox (consumables for the big Chevy get pricey, and his was too nice to comfortably risk it on track).

Green is good!

Yeah, the high price and short life of pads and tires for a 3900 lb doesn’t make much sense for regular track work (was bad enough in a 3700 lb car), but I would like to get it out on track at least once.

Mine’s pristine right now, so... yeah. Maybe once it gets some wear on it. My M3 was covered in rock chips by the end of my 8 years with it, but I also lived near and sand & gravel plant for a good portion of that time.

Kinja'd!!! WRXforScience > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
10/22/2020 at 14:16

That was my friends perspective too, he just couldn’t justify the cost of running the SS at the track regularly (especially since it kept appreciating in value). A trackday in my BRZ cost me $100-$200 and that includes gas and all consumables, my friend in the SS was spending $300-$400 on consumables and that was on relatively cheap street tires. Even with the 10-15 trackdays a year he was looking to do, a cheaper track car was an easy financial decision.

I did dive a number of old Gallardo’s which should be very close to the original R8's, they were fast but not great track cars. Once the excitement from driving an Italian exotic wore off, they couldn’t quite live up to expectations (one of those things that you’re happy to have done but don’t need to do more than once).

An 86, Miata, or S2000 all make excellent track/weekend cars that are cheap to run. If you are looking for a dedicated (trailered to events) track car, the spec cars are great places to look (Spec Miata, Spec E36, Spec Boxster, or Spec 911). You can also often find good deals on other people’s track cars, find a local who knows the type (or often you can find people who raced with/against the very vehicle) to look it over and spot things (basically a PPI but with added track considerations) and you can often get a smoking deal.

If you’re doing everything yourself, I’d recommend starting with a streetable track car and dipping your toes in before committing to a full blown racecar. Weight and horsepower are expensive.

I do like the NSX, my friend was doing the Acura booth at the last car show and he let me sit in it and we fired it up. Nobody will ever drive super cars to the limit, they look like a great car that can really go based on Lenos drive video.

I really don’t want to trailer (at least not for the foreseeable future), so something like an 86 is likely in my future. The appeal of a trackable car that can also be used for backroadtrips and taken to work once or twice a week is just too great for me.

My M3 was my streetable track car for the ~ 10 times I got to the track while I had it. Was definitely a One Car To Do It All, but it definitely wasn’t cheap to run . Honestly, with three young kids in sports , the time is the bigger consideration for me at this point.

Interesting, I tracked a first gen V10 with the auto and I thought it was a blast. Just seems like a perfect all around car although I have noticed the forum hounds hate the autos compared to the 'almighty' gated manual. I'd love to compare it against a new NSX, they look the business.

I would have been fine with a normal automatic, the car would slam shift itself and felt broken (might have been). Basically it shifted like a 17 year old who learned to drive by watching fast and furious movies. I had it in automatic mode (that’s just the mode it was in, and the laps were supposed to be just sighting laps to teach the student the line and track layout) and every time the car would shift it would slam the gears and throw me around violently enough that I was moved in the seat .

The power and handling was good, and the car was more than adequate (aside from the stupid shifting). I was really only disappointed because I had placed the R8 on a pedestal as my personal favorite supercar, after I drove one it dropped down to a cool car to drive around town or to dinner (still looks great). If the car had shifted normally, I’d have had a blast with it.

I might have been able to swap modes and fix the shifting if I was going to do more than just a couple of laps with the car, but even when the owner was driving and shifting the shifts were very rough (I bet we were in some dumb “sport mode” that was doing the hard shifts on purpose just to make it seem “sporty”).

I still like the R8 and would never judge anyone harshly for buying one. The new NSX I rode in (it was a check ride to sign off the driver for the solo group) felt, looked, and sounded great. I have no idea how it would compare to an R8 or really anything else though since the driver was new and I wasn’t driving (felt great from the passenger seat though).

If you just want a driver’s car, go with the GT3. They drive like magic and feel sinfully good on track. I don’t think they quite have the clout to get parked out front of the fancy restaurants like an R8, McLaren, or Italian exotic though, so you have to weigh your priorities (no judgment, those types of cars are meant to be o stentat ious ) . It’s not like any of the supercars drive poorly and I’d be elated if I was gifted any one of them or even just given free reign to drive the hell out of one.
